What are CCT Downlights

What are CCT Downlights

Colour Correlated Downlights

Over the last 5 years, Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT) adjustable downlights have become increasingly popular with consumers due to the ability to switch between colour temperatures without having to replace lighting fixtures.

Measured in Degrees Kelvin (K), the colour temperature given off by each downlight can vary by manufacturer, but all CCT downlights will offer the same basic colour options: Warm White (3000k), Cool White (4000k) & Daylight White (5000k).

How Do CCT Downlights Work?

There’s no one way to change the colour temperature of a downlight – and this will change dependant on the manufacturer. The majority of downlights can be adjusted via small dip switches on the face of the downlight (under the bezel), or on the back of the body.

Depending on your application and how often you’ll be adjusting the colour temperature of your downlights, you might find that products with a switch on the back are less than ideal – so it’s important to understand what you’re buying.

The flaw with switches on the back is that each light will need to be removed from the ceiling to have the colour temperature changed. However if you’re less likely to want to change frequently, or if you’re unsure on what colour temperature will suit your space best, these products can come in handy at the ordering stage.

Versions with the switch on the face also pose a similar issue as you’d still need to get a ladder out and remove the bezels to switch the temperature – for every downlight in the room.

Advantages of CCT Downlights

The obvious advantage with Colour Adjustable Downlights is having the flexibility of switching between colour temperatures depending on the function of your room, without the need of hiring an electrician.

For example, if you’re redecorating and decide to go for a warmer atmosphere in your lounge – with CCT Downlights – you’d be able to switch the colour temperature to a warmer white in order to enhance your new décor providing you with a new tone of light instantly. Plus, if you change your mind the light can be switched straight back and no expense or drama.
